What are the critical characteristics a board of directors needs to succeed?

The Nonprofit Consultant

For a nonprofit board of directors to succeed, the number one key ingredient is: Involvement. Boards fail (and, in turn, organizations fail) when board members become disengaged from either the mission of the organization or their role in the governance of the organization. An engaged board does more than simply show up for scheduled meetings and vote to approve minutes and budgets.

Reporting from Israel: December 15

Chad Barr

After a relaxing Friday with my family in Jerusalem, I drove today to Haifa to see one of my closest and best friends that I grew up with in Israel. I spent the day with Eitan, his amazing family and several friends he invited. We greatly enjoyed our time together and the great authentic food that his wife Ronit prepared. We all got to share some old stories and even some new ones.

An inspirational quote.

The Nonprofit Consultant

I came across this quote today that I think should be hung in every nonprofit workplace across the country. It's a great reminded of why we do what we do. "You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.

How do you allocate overhead costs?

The Nonprofit Consultant

One of the clients I'm working with has always only had one budget for the entire organization. This is fine for small nonprofits that only really have one or maybe two programs, but this client has grown out of that stage, and has at least five or six distinct programs and program areas that should be broken out of that budget. While we were working on that, the question from staff came up of, "How do we allocate the overhead costs to each program?

Yet more on percentage-based fundraising - AFP ups the ante

The Nonprofit Consultant

Just other day I posted an email exchange I had in which my correspondent argued that, contrary to what AFP (Association of Professional Fundraisers) and others may say, there are times when when contingency or percentage-based fundraising fees may actually be more ethical than flat fee or hourly rates. The argument was essentially that small organizations (indeed, most any nonprofit) can ill afford to pay up front for grant writing or other fundraising services that may or may not result in don

Our driver is waiting to take us to the airport and luckily we do not need to mount the suitcase on the roof of the car again. On the way to the airport, I chat with him about life in Israel. He tells me that two of his kids serve in the Israeli army and he knows that there will not be peace in his lifetime.

Do healthy neighborhoods require nonprofits?

The Nonprofit Consultant

Wednesday morning I was at a "study session" for grantees of San Jose's "Healthy Neighborhood Venture Fund" (HNVF) to review their new strategic plan. HNVF money is a result of the tobacco settlements, and San Jose has been using the majority of their funds ($10 million) to make grants to nonprofits. Of course, whenever the city's budget comes up, there are those who suggest that the city could better use the HNVF money by adding it to the General Fund and spend it all within city departments.

The Art of Remote Collaboration: How to Successfully Whiteboard with Remote Teams

Just because we're working with a distributed team doesn't mean we have to abandon time-tested tools and methods like whiteboarding. Digital look-alikes often cramp creativity and all but eliminate the humanity of shared interactions. Hardware solutions are also limiting and, of course, expensive and immobile. In an increasingly digital and remote-first world, it’s important for us to select tools and processes that allow us to mitigate if not eliminate the above problems.
