July 4, 1776, the second Continental Congress signed on to the Declaration of Independence, declaring the official break away from Great Britain to become an independent nation of the 13 original colonies. One could say that was a giant leap of faith as the American Revolution, which began in 1775, was still ongoing, and its conclusion would not be seen until 1783.
