I joined consulting to learn new things constantly, but over time I also realized I wanted to gain depth rather than persistently add breadth to my knowledge base. When I transitioned to a corporate role and stopped traveling weekly, I made an effort to diversify my social network.

For example, I worked in manufacturing for 5 years, and when I went to Stanford, I wanted out of manufacturing, and that’s a whole other story, but I was able to take that 5% of my time that was spent on TQM, total quality management, as a knowledge base that I had to transfer into something different.
