Getting Comfortable. According to Mike Abbot (General Partner in Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield and Byers) we all need to get comfortable being uncomfortable. The point was made in response to emerging research that indicates most of us will have completed 11 jobs by the time we are 50. With this rate of churn, by implication you are facing a lot of time ‘being uncomfortable’ (in the sense of not being fully sure of what you are doing).
My internal dialog started in 2008 when I decided to write another book to help me market my services. Here’s what my mind used to say: “Yeah, that’s a great idea for my second book! Let me think about it for awhile.” Then a day or two later, “No, that idea stinks, gotta find a better idea.”. This somewhat agonizing thought process repeated itself for more than five years.
When I was a child in school, I was taught that if you work hard, you would be successful. If you did your homework, you would get better grades. If you practiced your sport regularly, you improved and got better results. While there is definitely a relationship between hard work and better results, the relationship is not a perfect one. Warren Buffet did not work 10 billion times harder than the rest of us — though he definitely did work hard.
